With a little bit of rye of and whole lot of rhythm SubCity Dwellers are attempting to push Canada's docile ska scene past the 3rd wave. Formed in 2002 by various notables of the Winnipeg ska and punk scene including members of the Barrymores and the Crackdown, the SubCity sound combines classic elements of ska while attempting to add various other genres into the mix. The result is an infatuating live show that blends elements of ska, jazz, rock, reggae, punk and dub into one; a formula that remains progressive to this day. After the initial demo in 2004, "Let's get this shit started," the eight-piece band followed up in 2005 with "Out in the Streets." The EP was well-received managing to chart high on local campus stations and garnish generous reviews. The album also revealed SubCity's capacity for diverse songwriting, talented instrumentation and socially conscience lyrics, a combination sorely lacking in many of today's independent acts. With the residual brashness of the punk scene with the ability to transform pubs into dancehalls the SubCity Sound may just be the next savior of ska. - Kent Davies - CKUW
